South Ostrobothnia for tourists
Spend your South Ostrobothnian holiday in the peace of the countryside or amidst the vibrant events. The region is famous for its entrepreneurship, the fertile countryside and the versatile offerings of culture and events.
For a tourist, South Ostrobothia offers something different from the rest of Finland. The vast plains with the seas of barns represent the most typical Ostrobothnian scenery. The region has the largest plains in Finland, with the terrain ascending slightly towards the eastern border of Finland. The rivers and the biggest river valleys date as far back as to before the Ice Age. The biggest lake is the Lake Lappajärvi. Do you know what's a kärnäiitti? If not, find out at Lappajärvi.
The Spa Hotel Kivitippu on the Lappajärvi crater lake shore and the Kuortane Sports Resort with its hotels on the shore of Lake Kuortanejärvi are both popular wellbeing tourism destinations. Other attractive spots for tourists in South Ostrobothnia are e.g. the Powerpark amusement park and the spa hotel Härmä Spa in Kauhava, the Ähtäri Zoo (the second largest zoo in Finland), and the Brothers Keskinen Village Shop, which is the second largest department store (measured in sales) in Finland.
The most famous cultural events in the province are the Seinäjoki Provinssirock music festival, the Tangomarkkinat tango festival and the Vauhtiajot car-racing event. Representing the most well known architecture in Southern Ostrobothnia are e.g. the Lakeuden Risti Church and the City Hall in Seinäjoki, both designed by the legendary architect Alvar Aalto.
Those who enjoy nature on their travels can be allured by the Lauhanvuori and Kauhaneva-Pohjankangas national parks, in addition to the province's numerous nature trails with their bird-watching towers, lean-to shelters and unobstructed trail passages.
