Bathing Ritual

The strict rules of conduct of going to the sauna are taught to Finns as early as in their childhood. Shouting, swearing, arguing and storytelling are not part of the sauna etiquette. According to an old saying, one should behave in a sauna as one would in a church. And according to folklore, the sauna gnome becomes angry if he sees people misbehaving in the sauna.

The Bathing Ritual in Finnish Sauna today - how to get most the most out of it!
A recommended Sauna Procedure by The Finnish Sauna Society

0. Warm up your Sauna carefully and with skill, it takes 1-3 hours!
1. Give yourself plenty of time to the whole Sauna bathing ritual, 1-2 hours is sufficient.
2. Take all clothes off and drink water 1-2 glasses.
3. Take a shower first - if possible - or do a "pre-wash".
4. Use a cover cloth on the platform or benches. A sauna temperature between +70 and +80 degrees Celsius is the Finnish recommedation.
5. Start the warming in the dry Sauna and take the first LÖYLY (vapour) without the VIHTA (whisk).
6. After first sweating (about 8-10 minutes) take a shower or go to swim - if possible. During winter time you can even jump into smooth snow too!
7.Cool off and drink something refreshing.
8. Second warming now in the damp Sauna with...
9. ... with VIHTA, because your skin is now smoother than on the first time.
10. Avoid a LÖYLY-competition who can stand hottest vapour, because it is unhealthy and against Sauna ethics!
11. After the second warming with VIHTA and LÖYLY you can wash yourself thoroughly.
12. Help your sauna friend to wash his or her back.
13. After washing cool off again and drink again.
14. After washing it is all right to sit or lie in Sauna a while again.
15. End your Sauna bath with a shower aor swimming.
16. After Sauna you can relax and rest on the bench.
17. Drink again something refreshing and eat a light sauna snack.
18. Dress only after sweating has completely stopped.
19. Leave the Sauna clean, tidy and well ventilated.
20. After a good Sauna you feel relaxed and refreshed, almost like being reborn!
